Luminosity have been crowned the ESL Pro League Season 3 champions after defeating G2 Esports 3-2 in the final (10-16 on Overpass, 16-13 on Train, 10-16 on Cobblestone, 16-11 on Dust2 and 19-16 on Inferno)
The first map in the series was Luminosity's pick, Overpass, where the Brazilians had lost just one out of ten games since the start of the year, a true testament to their consistency here.
Fernando "fer" Alvarenga opened up the game with a trio of kills to give Luminosity the first round of the game, but then they were caught off-guard in a force-buy from G2, who went on to take a 3-1 lead.
After getting their economy stabilised once more, Luminosity went on a five-round winning streak, but G2 made the most of their double AWP setup and closed out the half with a 9-6 advantage.
Luminosity entered the second half the livelier of the two sides, picking up the first two rounds to reduce the deficit to a minimum. A third-round buy from G2 proved successful, with the French team going on a great run that saw them win the following three rounds.
Down 8-13, Luminosity called a tactical pause in a bid to adjust their defense. The move did pay off as they won back-to-back rounds, but G2 were not going to let a comeback happen and locked down the map 16-13, with Richard "shox" Papillon dropping 30 frags.
shox's 30 frags powered G2 on Overpass
Train was G2's map pick, but the score during the opening stages would have suggested otherwise as Luminosity (Counter-Terrorist) got out to a 7-1 lead. Adil "ScreaM" Benrlitom then single-handedly put G2 back in the game with a 4k and a clutch, but still Luminosity closed out the half with a commanding 11-4 lead, fuelled by some big plays from Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo with the AWP.
The second half began with G2 adding four rounds to their tally, with Epitacio "TACO" de Melo bringing the Frenchmen's streak to an end in a 1vs1 situation against ScreaM. G2 did not let that round loss get to them, however, and continued grinding out rounds, eventually bringing the scoreline to a 12-12 tie. Rounds then went back and forth, with Lincoln "fnx" Lau's sensational 1v3 clutch with the bomb planted giving Luminosity the edge they needed to seal the victory.
Cobblestone was the map that followed, and it was a very messy map at first as teams literally traded round for round during the opening stages of the first half. With the scoreline 3-3, each team took turns in grabbing three straight rounds, with Luminosity getting the last two rounds to take an 8-7 lead.
G2 came out of the gate looking scary, winning the first three rounds of the half to secure a 10-8 advantage. Luminosity crawled back into the game and equalised the score, but G2 refused to take their foot off the pedal and strung six rounds together en route to a 16-10 finish.
Luminosity fought back on Train and Dust2
Map four was Dust2, where G2 got off to a flying start, winning six of the first seven rounds of the game. A triple kill from Marcelo "coldzera" David during a B retake then gave Luminosity a much-needed round, with the Brazilian team following it up with three more rounds to close the gap to just two rounds.
G2 responded with a well-timed mid-B split, and even though they lost the following round, they still managed to keep Luminosity at a certain distance as they enjoyed a three-round lead heading into the second half.
The Brazilian side began the second half with a bang as they won the pistol round and the corresponding anti-ecos to tie up the game at 9-9. Alexandre "bodyy" Pianaro then went huge, picking up three crucial keys inside B, but G2's economy was reset right after.
With plenty of money to work with and the momentum in their favor, Luminosity reached map point without dropping a single round again. shox then gave G2 a lifeline as he won a 1vs4 clutch inside A, but there was no stopping the Brazilians, who ran out 16-11 victors to take the series to a fifth map.
fer was the hero on Inferno
The decider map was Inferno, where Luminosity got three rounds off the bat on the Terrorist side. G2 then scraped two somewhat lucky rounds, but with their economy in shambles they were unable to keep Luminosity from taking a 6-2 lead.
It was only then that G2 finally managed to adjust their defense, winning five rounds in a row to take the lead for the very first time on this map. The Frenchmen were then caught off-guard by a tec9 push from Luminosity, who still found themselves trailing their opponents by one round at the end of the half.
G2 knew that they would have to battle hard to get something out of this game as they were now playing on the Terrorist side, and Luminosity made things very hard for the Frenchmen, securing the pistol round and the following anti-ecos to take a 10-8 lead.
Once G2 bought up, the momentum shifted back and forth as neither side could stamp their authority on the game. The French team ended up reaching match point at 15-14, but Luminosity kept their cool and took the game to overtime.
With a perfect 3-0 half on the CT side, Luminosity reached championship point. In G2's first round as CT, shox pulled off another sensational 1vs4 clutch, but the Brazilians secured the next round to seal a hard-fought 19-16 victory to secure their second title in the space of a week.
