Kings defeat Athletico in the grand final of the Unikrn TV Australian Showdown 2-1 (16-9 Cache, 14-16 Overpass, 22-19 Mirage) to take the title and $3,950.
The double-elimination BO3 bracket started with two underdog wins, as Grayhound and Chiefs, who met in the ESEA Premier Season 25 Australia grand final just a few days ago, lost their opening matches to Athletico and Kings respectively.
To stay alive in the tournament, Chiefs 2-0'd Grayhound, getting some revenge for the ESEA Premier defeat. Kings took down Athletico in the upper bracket final 2-1, with Simon "Sico" Williams being a big factor in Kings' victory as he finished with a +21 K-D and a 1.32 rating.
After falling to the lower bracket, Athletico comfortably handled Chiefs, 2-0'ing Tyler "tucks" Reilly' side by picking wins on Cache and Train.
The grand final and the rematch between Kings and Athletico started well for Chris "emagine" Rowlands's team, who secured 10 rounds on the CT side of the first map, Cache, before closing out the game 16-9. Moving on to their map pick, Overpass, Kings were favored to close out the match 2-0, but a 10-5 CT side wasn't enough for them this time around. Athletico managed a comeback, winning Overpass 16-14 to force the decider map Mirage.
The last map was another nail-biter, but this time around Athletico were the ones that grabbed the lead early, with the 16-year-old Matthew "Texta" O'Rourke powering through his opposition. The youngster hit the 30 kill mark, but Athletico's lead slowly depleted throughout the second half and Kings secured overtime. After two batches of added rounds, Kings were able to break through and secure the map, series, and the tournament, with a 22-19 victory.
